What’s Your Smile Rate?

What’s Your Smile Rate?
Posted on 01/03/2023
How many times per day do you smile? According to an online Forbes article, “The Untapped Power of Smiling,” more than 30% of people smile more than 20 times a day, and less than 14% smile less than 5 times a day, while children smile as many as 400 times a day!

Have you ever considered that your smile rate may be connected to how you rate your smile?

People who are confident in the appearance of their teeth are naturally likely to more freely share their smile. A bright, beautiful smile helps make it easier to leave a great impression wherever you go. Those who smile more often are seen as happy, intelligent and trustworthy. On the other hand, those embarrassed by their teeth are less likely to smile as much, which can make them appear unfriendly, or even worse, rude.

The Forbes article points out that smiling is “evolutionarily contagious.” People have an “innate drive” to smile when we see a smile, even with strangers where there is no intention to connect or affiliate with the other person. We can’t seem to help ourselves. Humans are simply hardwired to “mirror” or “mimic” expressions.

It has been shown that people can perceive a smile from 300 feet away, making it the most recognizable of human expressions, and offering one of the most powerful initial impressions.

Although we may not like to admit it, in an image-conscious world, impressions are important, and the appearance of your smile impacts your daily life.

Do you fear that your smile leaves less of a good impression than you would like? Talk about your concerns with your family dentist or visit a cosmetic dentist. You may be surprised at how easily veneers can cover chipped, crooked, or stained teeth, and how conveniently misalignments and gaps can be corrected. Perhaps something as simple as whitening and brightening your teeth can improve confidence in your smile, allowing you to “up your smile rating” and your “smile rate.”
