Girl hanging out car windowAt Macon Smiles Dr. Sheila Shah provides comprehensive dental care for the whole family. We offer all the dental services you and your family need to achieve and maintain healthy & beautiful smiles! Below are some of the most common dental questions our patients ask Dr. Shah along with her answers.

Q: How often should I visit my dentist?
A: Our practice agrees with the recommendation made by the American Dental Association (ADA) which states that everyone should visit a dentist bi-annually for checkups and professional cleanings.

Q: What can I expect to happen during my visit?
A: One of our team members will compile your medical and dental history during your first visit. Dr. Shah will then provide you with a thorough examination which includes an oral cancer screening and diagnostic records (X-rays) as needed. Following the exam, Dr. Shah will speak with you about her findings, the level of cleaning needed and any treatment she recommends. We will discuss your options for treatment and payment to help you determine the best plan of action to take which fits your needs.

Q: What does “painless dentistry” mean?
A: Painless dentistry refers to making sure your treatment is as pain-free and stress-free as possible. We will discuss your treatment options that may require no local anesthetic and whenever possible, alleviate pain in the most comfortable manner.

Q: What should I do if I have a dental emergency?
A: Our practice is dedicated to the health and safety of our patients so please contact us right away if you have any type of tooth pain or dental emergency.

Q: Do you offer any types of payment plan options for the treatment I need?
A: Yes. We accept many types of dental insurance and will process your claim for you. We also accept payment via Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express. Additionally, we offer 0% financing through CareCredit. Please speak with our Financial Specialist if special payment arrangements are needed.

Q: Can you whiten my teeth?
A: Yes. Our practice uses industry-approved teeth whitening methods to whiten and brighten our patients’ smiles. One of our favorite methods is Zoom! professional teeth whitening that only takes one office visit to complete.

Q: What type of toothbrush should I use and how often should I replace it?
A: Adults should use a small to medium sized toothbrush with soft to medium bristles. Children should use small toothbrushes with soft bristles. It is fine to use a battery-powered toothbrush as they’re just as effective as manual toothbrushes. You should replace your toothbrush every 3 months or when you notice the bristles are wearing down.

Q: Do you recommend any particular type/brand of toothpaste?
A: No. However, we do recommend using a toothpaste that contains fluoride and which carries the ADA Seal of Acceptance. The ADA seal ensures the toothpaste is safe and effective to use. Fluoride makes tooth enamel stronger to help you avoid dental decay.

Q: Do I need to floss my teeth every day?
A: Yes. In order to prevent tooth decay from forming between your teeth, you need to floss once per day. Flossing every day also helps keep your gums healthy.

Q: Should I floss or brush my teeth first?
A: It doesn’t matter if you floss first and then brush or brush your teeth and then floss; however, if you brush after flossing, the fluoride in the toothpaste can better reach the areas between your teeth.

Q: What is laser dentistry and when is it used?
A: Laser dentistry is an innovative process that involves using a narrow beam of light energy for carrying out a variety of hard and soft tissue procedures. Laser dentistry does away with the need for cutting and stitching to result in less pain and swelling after laser surgery. The laser seals blood vessels and nerve endings for less bleeding and a cleaner procedure that greatly reduces the risk for infection.
